Trailer Coupling & Handbrake

This section explains how to safely connect and disconnect your BreathTrailer from the tow vehicle, as well as how to correctly use the trailer handbrake.

Correct coupling is essential for safe towing and legal road use.

Coupling System Overview

The BreathTrailer is equipped with a 50mm electric brake trailer coupling with an integrated manual handbrake.

⚠️ Only a 50mm tow ball must be used.
Using an incorrect tow ball size is unsafe and illegal.

How to Hitch the Trailer

Follow these steps every time you connect the trailer to a vehicle:

  1. Park the tow vehicle on level ground and apply the vehicle handbrake.
  2. Ensure the trailer handbrake is engaged.
  3. Raise the trailer using the jockey wheel.
  4. Align the coupling directly above the 50mm tow ball.
  5. Lower the coupling onto the tow ball until fully seated.
  6. Push the coupling handle down firmly until it locks.
  7. Attach the safety chains to the vehicle, crossed underneath the coupling.
  8. Connect the trailer electrical plug to the vehicle.
  9. Slowly raise the jockey wheel fully and secure it in the travel position.
  10. Release the trailer handbrake only after all steps above are completed.

Coupling Lock Check

After hitching, always perform this safety check:

  • Gently raise the jockey wheel.
  • If the rear of the tow vehicle lifts slightly, the coupling is locked correctly.

⚠️ If the coupling does not lock securely, do not tow the trailer.

How to Unhitch the Trailer

  1. Park the vehicle on level ground and apply the vehicle handbrake.
  2. Apply the trailer handbrake.
  3. Lower the jockey wheel until it supports the trailer weight.
  4. Disconnect the electrical plug.
  5. Remove the safety chains.
  6. Unlock the coupling handle.
  7. Raise the trailer coupling off the tow ball using the jockey wheel.

Trailer Handbrake Operation

Applying the Handbrake

  • Pull the handbrake lever fully upward until it locks.

Releasing the Handbrake

  • Push the handbrake lever fully downward before towing.

⚠️ Never tow the trailer with the handbrake engaged.
This will cause brake damage and unsafe driving conditions.

Safety Notes

  • Always double-check the coupling lock before driving.
  • Inspect the coupling and safety chains regularly for wear or damage.
  • Never exceed the trailer’s rated load or towing capacity.
  • If any component appears damaged or worn, do not tow the trailer until repaired.

Correct coupling and handbrake operation are critical for safe towing and long-term reliability of your BreathTrailer.
